- The pigment of the muscle that transports Oxygen.
- Myoglobin causes the red color in muscle and is responsible for storing Oxygen.
- Myoglobin is accepted as a protein storage for O2 in muscle.
- It is capable of releasing O2 during periods of hypoxia or anoxia.
- It is also thought to buffer intracellular concentration of O2 when the activity of muscle increases and to facilitate intracellular diffusion of O2 by then providing a parallel path that augments the simple diffusion of dissolved O2.
